Thaaaat’s oddly specific, I better look this up- oh

The four-year battle between Katy Perry and a group of nuns has produced its first casualty. Sister Catherine Rose Holzman died on Friday at the age of 89 after collapsing in a court hearing. She was one of two Sisters of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary who fought their archdiocese’s attempt to sell their former home to Perry. Sister Catherine Rose was responsible for such zingers as, “In selling to Katy Perry, we feel we are being forced to violate our canonical vows to the Catholic Church.” Her passing is sad, to be sure. But one has to admire such a dramatic final slug in a fight she believed in so thoroughly.

People who don’t understand the difference between punishment and discipline should, like, never have kids

hey op i dont understand the difference could you please explain?

Yeah ofc!! Sorry for being vague I was just venting and didnt expect reblogs haha

I’m gonna try to explain my point through examples.

Ex 1: toddler screaming and crying in the walmart

  • Punishment: I’m going to spank you or embarrass you or yell at you! Shut up! I’ll give you something to cry about!
  • Discipline: stop doing what you’re doing because it isn’t productive and it disturbs others as well as increasing your own upsetnes. I’m going to take you out of the environment that’s upsetting you until you’re calm and we can identify what upset you together so I can explain to you why it’s like that/help you find ways to productively express upsetness as you grow.

Ex 2: your teen is failing, like, all their classes

  • Punishment: you’re grounded! You’re not allowed to go out with your friends or play games or do anything fun or enjoyable until your work is satisfactory!
  • Discipline: it’s important to do well in school. You need to communicate with me when you are struggling so I can help you. You also need to learn to manage fun stuff and work as that’s an important life skill in adulthood. I’m going to monitor your work more closely so I can help you find that balance. And if this is a deeper mental or emotional issue, we can seek help for you together.

So basically, discipline is something you teach that requires time, communication, and sternness. Punishment is a single action meant to deliberately cause discomfort in an attempt to implement negative reinforcement. Not good.

helperhoopoe:

remember to cry for help without guilt-tripping. i know it feels like you’ve been abandoned and betrayed, but it’s probably not true, and it’s not okay to accuse the people around you of something they might not have done.

“i guess none of you like me” could be better phrased as “i feel unloved right now”

“but nobody cares anyway” could be better phrased as “i feel insignificant and i need reassurance”

rather than assuming others’ feelings, give them time to explain them. you’ll usually get a much better answer.

If y’all wanna know the true power of hate, just remember that Alan Turing, the breaker of the enigma code in WWII, was driven to suicide by being forced to undergo chemical castration as a punishment for his homosexuality.

Historians say he saved 14 to 21 million lives.

I’d also like to say in the time we studied WWII in school, the history textbooks never mentioned him. I had never heard of the guy until I watched “The Imitation Game” which I 110% recommend you watch if you haven’t.Alan Turing was a blessing to humanity who saved (once again) 14 to 21 million lives, and he is left out of history because he was gay.

And this is just one example?? So many brilliant and heroic people are left out of history because of their race, their gender, their sexuality, their religion, and it’s just because some bigots in positions of influence get to decide what parts of history are remembered.

image

This man has had a profound effect on the world, it’s estimated he shortened the war by 2 years, saved countless lives and was the father of modern computing. Without him the world would be a very different, and very dark place.

He wasn’t just chemically castrated. The injections they have him were intended to decrease his libido as part his sentence for “gross indecency”. About 2 years after his trial he was found dead in his apartment next to a half eaten apple that was filled with cyanide (which became the inspiration for the Apple logo).

Turing is one of the most amazing people in all of history. He developed our modern method of computing (see: the Turing Machine) and advanced computer science by immeasurable amounts. And he dies when he was 41. Just imagine if he lived in a world where he was accepted. Imagine the technology we would have today and how many more lives would have been saved. No person deserves what Turing got, especially not someone as brilliant as him.

TEACH. CHILDREN. ABOUT. ALAN. TURING! WHEN THEY LEARN ABOUT WWII, THEY DESERVE TO KNOW ABOUT THE MAN WHO ENDED IT!!!

maybe this is bc i’m from the south and not fuckin uhhhh new york or wherever the hell but like. it is still not really normalized for a man to wear makeup or nail polish. women with short hair still get offensive comments about their appearances. like even small acts of gender nonconformity can still be scary and dangerous in 2021 and i feel like so many people just live in this progressive bubble where they think that all dudes being Remotely “feminine” in some way are like homophobic tiktok e-boys doing it for clout or whatever and that’s uh. fucking stupid. like i can PROMISE you that the vast majority of gender nonconforming people are not trying to do something that’s never been done before, nor are they claiming to do so, they’re just trying to live their lives and look the way they want to look. you aren’t helping anybody by trying to police who has the right to be wearing skirts or painting their nails or doing their hair a certain way.

anyway this is ur daily reminder that gender nonconformity is not a trend and it’s gross to attack people for being gender nonconforming in a way that you think “has been done before” or “isn’t that special” or whatever the fuck. like i’m sorry but it’s just cruel and hateful! being gender nonconforming still takes bravery and courage. people still face discrimination and harassment. whose cause do you think you’re helping by attempting to be the gatekeeper of nontraditional gender expression? genuinely, who do you think benefits when you attack people for stepping outside of the bounds of traditional gender expression? who? because it certainly fucking isn’t gnc people.

Achilles’ eyes lift. They are bloodshot and dead. “I wish he had let you all die.”

The sheer number of layers to this…

toasty-bat:

Anytime I see those “God that rep from two years ago was so bad” posts, I think about Gravity Falls.

I think about the fact that Alex Hirsch wanted the cupid character (who appeared in ONE episode) to have the MLM/WLW symbols on his necklace, but Disney shot it down because it was seen as inappropriate for a kid’s show.

I think about the sheriff characters, who’s “relationship” was used as a running gag to laugh at. Who’s kiss in the last scene at the end of the series damn near made people go INSANE. These were two characters who were no one’s favorites and who served as comedy relief, but it was still seen as a huge win for rep because it happened at all.

I think about the fact that Gravity Falls, a show where dead animals speak in tongues as blood drips from their eyes, couldn’t have anywhere near the amount of rep that the creators wanted to add because it “wasn’t for kids”

And now we have men getting married to their husbands and women getting married to their wives on screen. We have boys with boyfriends and girls with girlfriends and characters that are purposely gnc or androgynous. We have characters with pride pins or flags in their rooms. We have cartoons like Blues Clues that have been around for AGES making entire videos dedicated to pride for kids.

Just… things get better. Representation gets better because people fight to make it happen. We can’t act like they were “basically nothing” because without them we would HAVE nothing.

Edit: the Cupid necklace was likely the trans symbol

  • “ I didn’t fall in love with you. I walked into love with you, with my eyes wide open, choosing to take every step along the way ”
  • “ I wanted to be there again. Again and again. I want to be held, I wanted to hold ” - Madeline Miller, The Song of Achilles

  • “ We reached for each other, and I thought of how many nights I had lain awake loving him in silence.” - Madeline Miller, The Song of Achilles

  • “ I could recognize him by touch alone, by smell; I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world.”- Madeline Miller, The Song of Achilles

Fellas, is it gay to go into a legendary rage, killing countless greeks, fight a river, and dragging the corpse of your enemy and the crown prince around the walls of his home multiple times in your chariot as vengeance because they killed your totally heterosexual life partner??? Be honest with me.

Whoever adapts The Song of Achilles better use the Trojan War to straightbait. Imagine: trailer full of swordfighting. Posters showing them in their armour. Promo images of a scantily clad dancer. Then BOOM. It’s a love story. The fighting is only a few scenes. That sexy dancer? Achilles in disguise.

@A24 you can have this idea for free.
